Fred Brooks is a gem of a person to have in its founding and history, and there appear to be numerous prolific professors who've had fantastic students go through UNC CS and go on to do fantastic things. Carrboro is a great place to live (small town next to chapel hill) or in chapel hill proper. NCSU has more of a college football tailgate culture though. Essentially, The Triangle (Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh (and its suburbs)) is all one town of ~2 million people dispersed over a wide area so you might have more options as opposed to elsewhere--living on the Chapel Hill side of Hillsborough too is something to consider (likely quiet and not much of a commute to the Eubanks P&R). I did the in person version and even that was not great. Having my daughter apply to UNC as an OOS applicant was a complete and total waste of time, waste of an application, just plain dumb. The very top students in North Carolina apply there of course, but the very tip-top students in California and Texas and New York and Illinois are applying to Ivies, Stanford, UChicago, MIT, Amherst, Williams, Duke they aren't applying to UNC very much, if at all. If you have trouble finding somebody in-person, there's several Facebook groups with thousands of people in it looking for off-campus housing and subleases (I suggest joining "UNC Chapel Hill Subleases, Roommates, Off Campus Housing & Apartments" because it's the biggest group and does not require a fee to join). OP, I really think you should reconsider given the recent outbreaks of COVID-19 on campus. Right after I graduated in 2008 from Ohio University, a really creepy graduate student, one known around campus to lurk outside undergrad dorms and classroom buildings, chain smoking and talking to himself, killed his professor father (the quite credible rumors going around at the time said he beheaded him whilst inflicting 50 stab wounds although that was not publicly released to the best of Hi! I chose UNC Law for a few reasons: (1) it is such a great school with a great environment for a great price (once I get OOS); (2) the area is a great balance of city/small town living; (3) NC is a great rising market; (4) my partner is in biomedical research and the triangle is great for that. Anyway, some of those articles have an average GPA for UNC, of course whining about grade inflation. i’ve heard nothing good about management. Frats have been known to sexually assault and rape women since their advent, and UNC especially has a huge problem with this (feel free to do your own research, and not just take my word on this). UNC Chapel Hill does not really accept students into certain programs. From my understanding, both those schools have great med schools and encourage undergrads to pursue research and/or shadowing. That is a fucking achievement. i'm still successful.
